How to maintain a swimming pool: a weekly checklist

Measure pH (7.2–7.6) and free chlorine (1–3 ppm) at least twice a week. Correct out-of-range values in small doses; large interventions upset the balance and can cause cloudy water.

Set your filter pump to turn over at least 1.5 times the pool volume per day. Increase run time in summer. Backwash when the pressure gauge rises by 1 bar; sand filters need backwashing, cartridge filters need cleaning or replacement.

Weekly brushing and skimmer basket cleaning reduce the filter load from leaves and dust on the surface. Wall and floor brushing delays algae growth; do not skip shaded corners.

Monthly calcium hardness and alkalinity checks prevent pH swings. Hardness should stay between 200–400 ppm. Calculate chemical doses for your pool volume; always re-test pH after heavy chlorine shock treatments.
