Pool winter maintenance: what to do at season closing

Season closing is critical for trouble-free opening the following summer. The first step is balancing water quality: pH 7.2–7.6, chlorine 3–5 ppm and algaecide dosing. Then complete filter backwashing and skimmer basket cleaning.

In frost-prone areas the water level is lowered below the skimmer; skimmer and vent lines are blown out. Water is drained from pump, filter and heater lines. Antifreeze or pool winter protection fluid can be left in the lines.

A pool cover blocks leaves, dust and UV damage. The water surface must be clean before cover installation; air-cushion winter covers sit above water level to prevent puddles. In spa and hot tub systems, blower lines must also be drained.

Check the pool cover monthly through winter; pooled water and weight can tear it. In indoor pools, a dehumidifier prevents building damage. Mechanical plant rooms should be checked for moisture and frost.
